Understanding Road Markings and How To Avoid PCNs
So, you booked the van to move your house or move the furniture, but is there a place to park? Since you are booking a man and van, it is important to know that you’re responsible to arrange a parking spot. Accordingly, you’ll need to look in front of your main entrance and check the road markings and parking bays. In addition, you should know that if you ask the driver to park the van at a restricted place, he has the right to refuse your request. Therefore, we’ll explain the road-markings and what you need to do in every situation.
Double Red Marking Next To The Curb
If there’s a double red marking next to the curb, this means the van can not stop, wait, or do loading and unloading. The double red road marking is the most restricted and any police officer witness this violation can issue an instant PCN to the driver.
Single Red Marking Next To The Curb
This is slightly less restricted than the Double Red Marking explained above. However, you’ll need to check the restriction time. For example, if the restriction is from 7am to 7pm, this means that it is not possible to do any loading or unloading. Also, any police officer witness this violation will issue an instant PCN to the driver.
Double Yellow Marking Next To The Curb With Small Double Yellow Marking On The Curb
This means No Loading or Unloading at anytime. Any traffic officer witness this violation will issue an instant PCN to the driver.
Single Yellow Marking Next To The Curb With A Single Yellow Marking On The Curb
This means it is allowed to do loading and unloading within a certain time-frame such as 10:00am to 16:00pm. Any traffic officer witness the loading/ unloading outside the time-frame specified, will issue an instant PCN to the driver. Therefore, you should check the signage that has the time-frame and book your van accordingly.
Single Yellow Marking Next To The Curb, Nothing On The Curb
This is a VERY tricky and you should be aware of. Since every borough in London has their own guidelines, roles changes. In some boroughs it means you are allowed to do the loading and unloading at anytime. However, other boroughs would put a small signage somewhere that has the restriction time-frame, and they trick the people by NOT marking the curb with one single yellow mark on the curb to warn about the restriction. Any traffic officer witness the loading/ unloading outside the time-frame specified, will issue an instant PCN to the driver, and will simply tell you “There’s a signage over there”. So you need to check if there’s any signage, or simply ask any traffic officer.
Pay And Display Parking Bays
This means any vehicle can park but you’ll need to pay the fee to the driver.
Resident Permit Holders Only
As the title, you’ll need to check the restriction time-frame and book your van accordingly. However, you can apply and obtain a permit from the council to park the van for free. This is a simple process and very straightforward, but you need to contact the council around 2 weeks prior your moving date. If you need to check the London council’s contact details click here
Loading At The Bus Stop
Do not even think about it. All buses are fitted with cameras and the driver will receive a PCN by post after a few weeks, supposing the traffic officer was not around.
What Is The Congestion Zone? Is My Address In The Congestion Zone?
The London congestion charge is a fee charged on most cars and motor vehicles operating within the Congestion Charge Zone in Central London between 07:00 and 18:00 Mondays to Fridays. The Congestion Charge does not operate on weekends, public holidays or between Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. However, the Ultra-Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) operates 24 hours and 7 days per week
Every vehicle enters this zone should pay a toll charge between £11.50 and £24.00. In order to check if your trip starts or ends in the congestion zone, you can check the address at the TFL website at this link.
